The Crucible is Arthur Miller's retelling of the Salem witch trials that took place in the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the late 1600s. It focuses on accusations, trials, heresay vs. evidence, and character assassinations, paralleling the atmosphere of the time in which it was written: the 1950's, with the rise of McCarthyism and the House Un-American Activities Committee.
